Who Is Your Teacher?

Yesterday I shared some thoughts on this and it seems like a good topic to continue here. I received enough feedback yesterday to prove this is one thing that many people can relate to and appreciated hearing. So the bottom line is who is your teacher? For me, the answer is children.

I know, as adults we’re supposed to be the teachers, mentors and guides in life. But I am often blown away by how much children have to teach when we choose to pay attention. In today’s world you are hard pressed to find very many places and organizations where kids are respected. So it warms my heart ten fold when I witness those few places where they are.

My kids teach me all the time. Often I am reluctant to their lessons on patience and cleaning, but they sure are persistent teachers! LOL They remind me to keep it short, especially if I’m talking, and to keep it simple. But most of all I think our children are the Lord’s greatest blessing to teach us in the smallest sense the lessons we need to learn to prepare for our own eternal potential.

Yesterday morning I awoke at 5:30 a.m. to the screams and cries of my 3 year old son. By the time he made it to my bedside he was quivering and trembling. Through the tears and sobs he repeated “I scares! I scares!”. I knew he had a horrible nightmare and it took several moments of loves and snuggling in my bed to calm him back down and to sleep.

As I reflected on this later that morning I realized how much like him I am in a spiritual sense. Sometimes I am frightened and unsure and I need very much the loving arms of one who will hold me, comfort me and help me feel secure. I run to the Lord the same way my son ran to me.

There is more than coincidence in the scriptural teachings that we must become like a little child (Matthew 18:4). Children, by nature, are so Christlike. They are meek, submissive, humble, honest, caring, forgiving, non-judgmental, and constantly seeking to learn and grow. Would that I could say I still have these qualities as strongly as I did when I was a child.

Yes, we are privileged to be their stewards for a time, to teach and raise them in the ways of right and truth. But at the end of the day they are still the greater teacher. In the end, I think this is the test we want to get an A on, so I think we’d all be very wise to pay attention to the master teachers.

  1. Exactly! Excellent post. It such a twist on the way we normally think. I think this is why listening can be so much more powerful than talking. (Yet so much harder to do.)

  4. What a great post. I totally agree that we can learn a lot from our children if we just take the time to pay attention to them.

BTW, I’m on a layover in San Fran right now but I’ll send out your chocolates as soon as I get back! Congrats!

  9. [...] I couldn’t help but chuckle. I also couldn’t help myself from thinking how there’s a lesson in this simple act. How often do we find solutions to our own personal roadblocks? Today I’m working on defining a few of my own candy dishes and solutions. Thanks again little buddy for being the teacher. *wink* [...]
