Better Luck Next Time

Filed under: Blogging, Funnies, Sharing — holly.schwendiman @ 4:31 pm

So if you think getting tagged once is enough, better luck next time. But maybe it’s because the first time I didn’t share my five unknowns with any flare or story - just a flat list. Okay, I’ll give it a go ago and try to make it as interesting as Daddy Forever’s. *wink*

In high school I was so self-conscious about being skinny that I’d never wear a short sleeved shirt because I thought my elbows looked like freakish knobs. Similarly, I’d scrunch up taller socks or layer two pair to help fill the gap from my shoes to the hem of my pants and if any gap ensued after sitting I could be found holding my hand over said gap. And speaking of socks, it was often that element that determined what I wore - always dependent on whatever I could find a match for and that was clean. Ironically, today I don’t think I own a pair of socks!

I love to scare my husband. Lucky for me (not for him) he’s an easy target which I quite literally stumbled upon within a few months of marriage. He went to the other room to get some laundry out of the dryer and somehow didn’t know I was walking right behind him. I stood there waiting for my turn to get my clothes for the next day and when he turned around and saw me he nearly passed out after jumping out of his skin and letting out a strangled scream like sound. I fell to the floor with fits of laughter as he stood there shaking his way to recovery. It’s been downhill ever since.

I once tried to back out of a garage…while the door was still down. I couldn’t figure out how come I wasn’t going anywhere and a little more gas wasn’t making any difference. My dad wasn’t impressed. At least it wasn’t the family cat - that was my sister’s doing.

I learned that Velcro is NOT the best tool for stage costumes at the tender age of 12. I remember doing the “Cowboy Joe” dance and looking down at a dancer’s skirt on the stage. I started giggling to myself thinking how embarrassing that must be when I noticed the color of sequins on it - yellow. Wait a minute, MY color is yellow……! To my credit I finished that dance while my sister (the same one that ran over the cat in the garage –twice–stopped dancing to stare at me and laugh.) It’s one of only two costume fiascoes that I never forgave my mom for. We’ll save the other for another day.

And finally, I was considerably older than I should have been when I finally understood what “par for the course” meant. My dad used to say stuff like that all the time. In fact, if you’ve ever seen the Disney movie “Cars” you’ve met my dad because I’m quite certain they used him for the ‘Mator’ character. At any rate, he used to say this all the time but it never made sense to me because no one in my family golfed. In fact, it wasn’t until I took a golf class with my mom at college that it finally struck me that the phrase had a meaning. The moral of the story is don’t use phrases for which you have no association or interest in lest you really mess up your kids. *laugh*

I’ll leave the tag element to anyone that wants to participate.

  1. Ooops, sorry I didn’t know you had already been tagged. But it is funny. Can’t believe you backed out with the garage doors still closed. My college roommate once drove into the garage with his bike still attached to the roof of the car.

No oops, it was good for me to stretch my share into more story form and to come up with some really different things. Why is it the most embarassing things are always the most funny? LOL

  2. That thing about the garage door is hilarious! Did it leave a dent in the door or the bumper? LOL!

It was a wood door and it cracked the base in the middle but it still worked fine. Yeah, I felt pretty smart. ;o)

  3. I’m lucky I haven’t been tagged yet. Then again, I haven’t shared my blog yet with too many people either!

I loved the one about scaring your husband, and the one about stage costumes. ;o)

Tee hee - the scaring is great fun! ;o) You should take up the challenge, it can be fun to come up with 5 things.
