Hairy Details

I’ve often been left scratching my head over the details of hairstyles and why it’s different for the sexes. How is it that grey hair can make a man dignified but a woman old? It’s also interesting to see how the length of hair impacts impressions.

Take me for example. In junior high school I had a short layer hair cut. When I’d take my younger sister to the park people would ask me how old my daughter was. I couldn’t believe it but neither could they when I’d reply that I was only 13 years old! During high school I was often mistaken as a college student. Then after I graduated I let it grow long and people started asking me when I was going to graduate from high school! When I got married and took a job as an office administrator I had a hard time getting people to take me seriously because I looked so young. I cut my hair short and everything changed. In fact, a few years later I was accused of being my younger sister’s mother…on her wedding day! Not surprising I grew it out again after that.

A few weeks ago my husband decided it was time to try a new do. He said he needed to find the right style that wouldn’t get messy when he buys his Benz convertible. *wink* It’s funny how much a hair style impacts first impressions. He is now being mistaken for the cocky high school jock mentality yet all that changed was his hair.

If still in doubt, watch Hugh Jackman in “The Fountain.” His 3 extreme hairstyle differences make a very different Hugh. I’m still contemplating the show.

You can define every generation by a popular hairstyle. Funny how something so minute can have such far reaching impact. Thankfully, hairstyles don’t seem to recycle at the same extreme that fashion does. Pray that poodle perms and 4 inch tall bangs straight up never come back into style…pray people.

  1. Don’t even get me started on The Fountain… I saw deep underlying meanings to the movie, John saw sci-fi mumbo jumbo. LOL!

I think what you are saying about hair is so true! I’m still debating over mine. I have gray at the temples, it looks pretty good when i fix it, but if I put it in a pony tail I sure look OLD. Probably because the gray is more noticeable.

They say older women look better with short hair, but I would love to be able to put it in a pony tail and go… Blah, see my problem? I refuse to dye my hair anymore since the gray shows right away , like within a week after dying.

That’s too funny about The Fountain, it was definitely deep. I imagine it’s the “dream” movie for directors and actors for the depth aspect. Hair is just always so much work. Maybe I’m just jealous that guys get the breaks there….LOL

  2. I have not seen The Fountain, but I have seen Sinjaya on Idol. I wonder if he messes with his hair like that in real life or is it all for the show?

    Ah great example!! :)

  3. Holly,

What a stunning blog. Your blog is such a worthwhile and important endeavor. The adoption issue is near and dear to many hearts. I looked into your blog a bit. The layout is gorgeous and the pictures of your family heart-warming.

Thank you so much for promoting BlogBlast especially with Wordless Wednesdays. Your globe is simply wonderful. I hope others will follow and make “family” globes.

Your globe is now in the galleries. I didn’t know your location so I just listed you as in the USA.

See you on June 6th. Have a great weekend.

    Peace,
    Mimi Lenox

Mimi what a wonderful and warm comment. Thank you so much for taking time to share it. I’ll definitely be by on the 6th and before. ;)

  4. Ever since I got bangs, I swear I have lost ten years. People all the time mistake me for being much younger. Of course, I like to consider myself young anyway, but that’s besides the point…

Bangs hugh? Guess I’ll be keeping mine then! LOL

  5. I’ve always believed that your hair is your most important feature. It can make you or break you. I’m never really satisfied with mine. When I have long hair, I want to cut it short. When I cut it short, I can’t wait till it grows out. *sigh*

Hee hee, someone I can truly relate with!

  6. hi holly!
you were third on my meme list–so i decided to come back for a quick visit to the west. (west of me that is)
this post about hair is interesting. I also like how as you tell the story of the mistaken identity at your sister’s wedding…you seem to just shrug it off–and then you adjusted the hair…:)
this must be an indication of how you take life in stride. you reflect, take action and then move on.
    impressive.
hope you are having a good weekend so far.
