I can't wait to try this with my kids....and maybe the neighbors' kids too. I have a question though...I live at high altitude (8500 feet) and wind up with terrible results many times when baking. Does the gingerbread recipe need to be adjusted for high altitude baking?

Hi Candy,
You know, I'm not really sure! You may try making a half batch of "cookies" first to see what the dough does and then adjust the flour as necessary. ;)

Hello,
I really LOVE your gingerbread creations and tried to make such an awesome thing as well. I followed your instructions and the house turned out really well untill I came to the frosting. Well, I have some questions: how do you get around those little corners of the house with such a nice frosting? I put the frosting (which tastes delicious) on the entire house so the kids could decorate it butthere was nothing left and it was impossible to do those cute trimmings. How are you doing it?
Thanks for all your help
Simone

Well, I start with the edges and only apply frosting to the places where we're putting the candy, I don't put it over the entire houses. Of course, nothing wrong with making more! :) If the piping isn't giving you the shapes you want (I use a basic star tip for most everything beyond the straight tip for lines), you may need to thicken the frosting a bit with more powdered sugar. You know, the wilton website has great decorating tips that can help you see what tips make various patterns. That might be worth looking at too. I'm so happy to hear that you had success! It can really get contagious once you gain some confidence!! :)

I love it! I had never thought of using frosted wheat for the roof! We are making a ginger bread house too, I have a question... Do you think that store bought plain vanilla icing will work for gluing it together? I could just whip up some simple royal icing I guess though and save the frosting for decorating?

I'd do royal icing for glue because it's so much more sticky and hardens well and quickly. Store frosting will probably stay soft too long and result in your house falling.

Wow, you made it from scratch. Impressive. I noticed you didn't use a glue gun to hold the candy on the roof. My wife must be the weird one.

Eh - whatever works! :)
