Crazy

Just couldn’t keep from sharing these two crazy happenings of late. The first was that my daughter reported yesterday not getting to go outside for recess. Why you ask? High pollution she responded. Now, I remember missing recess and even school because of extreme weather but never pollution. And yesterday was no different for me being outside than any other, in fact I was with my son all morning and we had a fire drill that took his entire school outside, recesses were normal there. I don’t get it. But I snapped this photo this afternoon when I noticed the thick haze on the horizon and it reminded me of all this. If you look hard you can just make out the line of the Superstition Mountains through the smog.

And remember that volunteer palm my husband cut off last Saturday? The one that we speculated had the middle popping up because the outside was drying faster but really had no idea? Well check this out from today:

Apparently it wasn’t about drying at all! And for reference this was what it looked like almost a week ago:

Apparently palms are much hardier than we thought and sawing the entire tree off doesn’t kill them - or at least not this one!

Crazy stuff.

  1. We think of smog as a California thing, but it sure is spreading. I live 3 hours from Toronto with a whole lot of trees instead of buildings, and we still get high smog days. The wind brings it north. The trees just can’t keep up with the amount we are producing.

    It’s true!

  2. We even have mild smog advisories here from time to time. But having to stay in for recess - that’s a bummer! It’s my two-year blog anniversary, and I’m republishing my first post. I know we started at almost exactly the same time - isn’t it wild?

It is wild, I can’t believe the two year mark has already come!

  3. We don’t really smog problems around here. Though in the summer, smog warnings do go out on very hot days.

    Rain is good for smog.

  4. The kids never had the recess deal at our school. makes sense. It’s crazy…
In Brazil we had the rain problem, when it rais, it’s no recess for weeks.
    hugs

Yeah, the kids don’t like the rainy day recess schedule here either.

  5. It’s sad when kids can’t go outside because of everything we’ve done to our environment. It’s crazy to keep them in, and almost more crazy to keep them out of it. Wouldn’t it be smart do adapt to the pollution instead of keeping away from it. If that’s the case, at some point many many years from now, we’ll all HAVE to be in doors. I’m no scientist though so who knows? It’s crazy either way.

It is crazy hugh! Nice to see you. ;)

  6. We had something similar going on here recently. Due to Kilauea erupting and the wind direction, the sulfur in the air was hard on anyone with breathing problems. Even I had a hard time.

We take so much for granted don’t we?
