Halloween … Things

Filed under: Sharing, Holidays, Blogging — holly.schwendiman @ 9:26 am

Halloween has never been my favorite holiday. As a kid I have some fun memories of the school carnival and the sweet lady that lived by grandma who made doughnuts every year. I loved sitting in her kitchen with milk and warm doughnuts. But I also remember how wicked cold it was in Idaho by Halloween. And dark, it was always SO dark, and the fear of the “dog” that might chase you off the property was scary enough in the daylight hours let alone at night! Several years we’d trudge through snow in our costumes, which you couldn’t see because you were wearing winter coats, hats, gloves and boots! We also lived out in the country which meant driving to homes to trick or treat and ultimately that meant we were lucky to get in about a dozen stops. No pillow cases were needed for a candy stash, a Ziploc bag would have sufficed. And boy did you hoard your stash! Not only did you guard it well you devoured it all within the first few days. After you were frozen to the bone you’d go to the school for the carnival where food, fun, games and treats galore waited to greet you.

My kids however LOVE Halloween. Today homes are decorated as well or more so than they are for Christmas and there is at least as much hype around it commercially. I don’t claim to understand this, I just recognize it. Sadly, times have also changed in that you have to be guarded about what you set out. If you don’t want it to grow legs and walk away or if you want that carved pumpkin not get smashed, you can’t put it out unless/until you’re there to watch it. *sigh* Between house decorations and glow lights there’s no dark in Halloween nights anymore.

Trick-or-Treating is different as well, and it brings new meaning to “sugar rush.” Now it’s not safe to go to places you don’t know. If you don’t live in a nice neighborhood where you know your neighbors, you’re best bet is a trunk or treat sponsored by school or church. And that gets crazy too because pillowcases ARE necessary to hold the candy stash! Every year we joke about our process for these goodies. At my house the kids bring home two huge bags filled with penny candies. They spend the first 1-2 days picking through their bags with the novelty of it, pulling out the good stuff - that of course being the mini candy bars, and then the bags are virtually forgotten. I then take the stash, dump it into a container in the pantry and it becomes the “friend” treat stash for all those many days when neighbor kids come over to play and want a treat. The kicker is that even with this process, that container gets a yearly dump about the time Halloween rolls around again to make room for the new stash. It always feels like I throw away the vast majority of those collections each year. We live in a nice neighborhood and so on Halloween night it is crawling with costumed children. Our kids make it down about 3 streets and they have a bag full of candy, and that doesn’t cover more than about 1/8th of our neighborhood. It’s craziness. Then they join to play in the cul-de-sac while parents visit and pass out metric tons of candy to a never ending line of trick-or-treaters.

This year, my husband and I are opening our garage and driveway to fellow parents. We’re going to have chili on hand with some fruit punch and space to pull up a chair. I’ll probably put out the kids pop-up playhouse and tent for the little guys to play in while moms and dads rest and visit. This is what makes the whole Halloween affair enjoyable for us. Having time and reason to sit and visit with other friends.

As an adult I realize why more carnivals don’t happen now. It’s because there are always only a small handful of willing adults to give of their time setting up and manning all the booths and games. The burnout rate must be insane. This past Saturday our church did a carnival night. My husband and I were asked to do a family friendly, G-rated Fear Factor room. It turned out great, but by the time the hour and half were over we were well expired. We didn’t see our own children the entire time because we were busy with the room. Here’s what we did:

Do You Dare?
This was a table with things to feel and touch. I took two boxes and cut openings in the front. I taped down a bowl for contents and had each person brave enough to put their hand in feel what waited inside. I needed the contents to not be gooey or slimy for the mess factor (I wasn’t going to provide towels or napkins for cleaning or wiping), besides that it was completely dark in the room. So I did cooked, cold noodles for that wormy general gross feeling, peeled grapes for eyeballs, uncooked rice for “bugs”, and three kiwi for fuzzy/fury spiders. At the end of the table I stood making up silly rhymes about how hard at work I’d been and how they should put their hands inside if they dared. The final item on the table was my “brain” which was a watermelon carved to look like a brain. It felt cold and weird on the surface and I totally grossed out a few people by digging inside and pulling out a piece to eat.

Tunnel
This was black plastic table covering draped from the top of the chalkboard to the floor in lean-to fashion. I taped string up inside to feel like cobwebs.

Jack’s House
This was the pop-up play house with the lit up jack-o-lantern inside. When they got a scare by a hidden “ghoul” coming out of the tunnel they ran to the house to be safe. Just as they got comfortable Blake spooked them. He got leg cramps sitting back behind that house but it was a great ending to the room. I brought them through in small groups of about 7-8 at a time. It felt like we did it a hundred times in the hour and a half it was open.

The other room decor was simple. I put up some lights and tombstones for a small graveyard and cut out eyes to tape up around the door and wall to reflect the black light. I recruited a few kids and covered them with some black table cover so they were invisible until they popped up or reached out from under the dare table to grab feet. The room was finished by making a Halloween sound track to play during the night. It runs 1 minute and we put it on eternal repeat.

My Halloween Sound Track

My kids are on the countdown for Friday night. I’ve decided it’s more about the hype of dressing up and playing with friends as well as the novelty of collecting treats that gets them excited. For me it was actually obtaining some free candy, for my kids it’s more the collection process and playing with friends that interests them most. I’m looking forward to sitting in my driveway in the great AZ night weather and eating my bowl of chili.

Sea World

Filed under: Family, Sharing, Travel, Blogging, Recreation, Memories — holly.schwendiman @ 10:07 am

I have one last post on our trip to Texas. On our last day there we went to Sea World and it was the highlight for all of us. The park was perfect and quiet for most of our day there. In fact, the only “crowd” we saw at all didn’t come until about 4 PM and up to that point it felt like we almost had the entire park to ourselves!

The first show we took in was just getting started when we got there and included choreographed swimmers with dolphins. It was such fun to watch!

The second show we took in was one Blake remembered with the Sea Lions. It was all about the mystery case of the missing fish. I managed to capture a few meaningful and crisp photos of the action. The opening “warm up” show was done so well. The guy who did the one man entertainment while passing the final minutes to show time was engaging and so much fun. The kids laughed the entire time! The show didn’t disappoint either.

We walked ourselves silly stopping for fun photos here and there. Surprisingly, Cidnie hammed it up.

Getting wet was of course another big highlight for the kids. Make that getting soaked!

Feeding and touching the dolphins in the nursery was another favorite:

We enjoyed double Shamu shows, the first one during the day:

The other a special Halloween show done at night:

It was a full day of fun that made the next day’s drive home not only worth it but quiet to boot! It was a GREAT week in San Antonio and we look forward to going back.

Alamo and Riverwalk

Filed under: Family, Scrapbook, Sharing, Motherhood, Food, Blogging, Memories — holly.schwendiman @ 3:23 pm

One of our most relaxed days on our trip ended with a trip to the Alamo and Riverwalk. It was fantastic!

Taylor thought museum part was boring. Imagine that coming from our six year old boy. *giggle* I, however really enjoyed it! Then we walked down to the Riverwalk and enjoyed the streets as we went.

The Riverwalk is a fun strip of restaurants, shopping and other business that run along the river. We ate dinner at Boudro’s based on Blake’s co-worker’s suggestions and we weren’t disappointed. We sat right out on the river where the kids enjoyed learning about the different tour cruises going up and down the river, and why you wouldn’t want to feed the ducks from your table.

Naturally we had to take the tour cruise after talking with one of the boat drivers parked next to our table for a while. We ended up waiting for a little longer than we thought for the next boat, hence the kids actually sitting…but it was great.

Then we hooked up with the cousins again for ice cream! Taylor said he was “girl locked” at the ice cream bar and I almost dropped the camera from laughing so hard. He smiled and said it was okay though. Those girl cousins are so much fun!

It was such a fun and relaxed day and evening. The Riverwalk is the highlight of San Antonio and anyone who doesn’t take it in while they are there will be truly sorry!

Bulletin…

We interrupt our vacation reporting posts for this important news flash.

Blake and Holly just entered the REAL cell phone world:

I’m the proud new owner of the iPhone! So far I love it as much as my iMac and I’m already wondering how or why I lived so long without one. I think I may actually use my phone now. And the best part is that I can use the One to One training I got with my computer to learn all the tricks with it!

Treasure Hunting

Filed under: Family, Sharing, Motherhood, Success, Travel, Recreation, Memories — holly.schwendiman @ 9:27 am

A week ago today was my daughter’s eleventh birthday. (How’s that for family planning when planning is outside your power? My kid’s b-days are a whopping 3 days apart! *giggle*) We took in the Natural Bridge Caverns and dinner at a fun little spot off the Guadalupe river. At first she wasn’t so sure this sounded like a stellar birthday list of activities.

But the first event turned her around as she panned for gems:

Then the cousins arrived and we got to be explorers in a 75 minute tour of the caves. Her favorite part was going down 180 feet and she asked the guide every couple of minutes how far we’d gone down! She also enjoyed how big it was, the bat foot prints on the ceiling and finding things like fried eggs, king faces and the statue of liberty in the formations.

Then it was on to dinner at the Gristmill:

And the smiles came even before the birthday treat that had Cidnie written all over it….Strawberry Shortcake!!

We even got a case of the sillies…

If there was any doubt the day was stellar it was laid to rest when we got back to the room and she opened her gifts. The coveted Nintendo DS she’s been asking for for 2 years now was waiting for her!

I think we’ll wrap this one up as a resounding success. *grins*

9 Years Late

Filed under: Adoption, Positive Impact, Blogging, Business — holly.schwendiman @ 1:27 pm

I just got off the phone with an interviewer. He had questions about our adoption website: HopeToAdopt.com and was considering adding it into a TV story he was working on. Oh I wished for such a break years ago! But today our site is in transition. It was a delightful conversation and I’m so tickled he’d find me, call me and care about my input. I asked him where he was 9 years ago when we paid to have a story done for public television that never went anywhere!

The crazy thing is I actually gave the one adoption site that’s been on my crap list for the past decade a media referral! I figure if it does anything good for the adoption world in general it’s worth it. I’ve never cared for the attitude, approach or monopoly factor of Adoption.com but I do care deeply for adoption and those affected by it. So I passed him on to them. *gasp*

On the bright side, he complimented me on our site and efforts and said he thought it was a great story that should be told! I feel that way too. I will never regret what we put into it or all the great things that have come from it! Too bad this call was 9 years late.

Corpus Christi

Filed under: Family, Sharing, Motherhood, Travel, Recreation, Memories — holly.schwendiman @ 2:20 pm

Our second day in Texas was Tay’s sixth birthday. I’m not at all sure how that happened as it feels like only yesterday he was toddling around my ankles. Time is funny that way. My little boy is growing up.

It was also Columbus Day so we rallied the cousins and headed to the coast for the day. Even though we’d just spent 15+ hours in the car the kids were great about tacking on about 6 more for the round trip to the coast. I think it paid off.

We had lunch on the bay where Tay enjoyed a really fun birthday bowl (to which he replied “this is the best day of my whole life!”) and took a ton of pictures with his camera.

Then it was off to the Texas State Aquarium!

Where the kids got to hold “spiky and slimy things” which made them both a bit squeamish at first but both held the little critters in their hands.

But the dolphins won his heart.

Then it was off to the beach…

And finally back to the room for a bath and presents!

Now just for kicks and giggles, I’ll share one of the few photos I have of our first visit to Corpus about 12 years ago!

Where To Begin?

Filed under: Family, Scrapbook, Sharing, Travel, Recreation, Memories — holly.schwendiman @ 11:14 am

Do I start with the laundry? Grocery shopping? Uploading and sharing photos? There’s so many options.

I’m proud to say that I did get the grocery shopping done. I made myself go right after dropping off kids at school this morning! I did some laundry before we left so I’ll put that off for a little longer and dive into some photo shares!

I have to start with a fun story of my technology working. As we approached Tucson last Saturday I noticed a mountain outline on the horizon. I was almost positive it was the one described in Stephenie Meyer’s book, The Host but wasn’t completely sure. Well, I grabbed my Kindle and typed in mountain peak in the search option. Sure enough several options popped right up for the book and I read her description matching exactly what I was seeing. I grabbed the camera and starting snapping some photos. As we got closer I found the reference in the book about Picacho Peak just before I saw the first sign. Success. It was so fun to have my Kindle put to such great use!

Next it was on to park fun at Six Flags:

The park was decked out for Halloween fun, and they even colored the water of several water rides in the spirit of Halloween!

On our second ride we got a little wet. Dad and Tay got a little soaked and dad’s phone that was in his pocket didn’t survive.

The kids still weren’t wet enough so we hit this ride and finished the job so we all looked like we just stepped out of the pool!

Dad talked Cidnie into taking on his favorite style ride. Suffice it to say there was plenty of screaming and maybe a few choice words from her.

It was a great start to a really fun week. We wrapped up the evening with a nice dinner at my sister’s where the kids had a right good time playing with cousins. We’re so happy we got to go visit them and have so much fun doing it!
